A4-80 Stainless Steel

A4-80 Stainless Steel

A4-80 is 316 grade stainless steel (A4) made to a high tensile strength of 800 MPa.  Other 316 items are often made to 700 MPa (A4-70) or 500 MPa (unmarked).

A4-80 Features:

  • Composition: An excellent grade of stainless steel, so primarily the content is iron, with significant amounts of chromium (16-18%), nickel (10-14%), and molybdenum (2-3%). These elements enhance its corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
  • Mechanical Strength: Minimum tensile strength of 800 MPa, making it suitable for high-stress applications.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in marine and chloride-containing environments. But not as high as that of Super Duplex 2507-80 stainless steel.

Common Uses:

  • Marine Industry
  • Chemical Processing
  • Oil and Gas

When considering A4-80, other material options to consider are:

  • Bumax 88 and Bumax 109 – Versions of of 316/A4 with slightly higher molybdenum content and therefore corrosion resistance.  Bumax 88 is made to Class 80 (800 MPa) and Bumax 109 is made to class 100 (1000 MPa) tensile strength levels.  A waxed coating on Bumax products also ensures a reduced chance of galling/cold welding.
  • 2507 Class 80 – Super Duplex 2507 made to Class 80 also, but with a higher yield strength and higher PREN and Corrosion Resistance.
