Comparison Chart

Grade Strength (Tensile) PREN Key Use Case
2202 (Class 80) 0.05 - 0.20 24 High strength and cost effective
Hardtec 0.14 - 0.20 36 High strength and high corrosion resistance
2507-80 0.14 - 0.20 36 Highest strength and high corrosion resistance
Bumax 88 0.14 - 0.20 36 The highest strength - made to order
Bumax 109 0.24 - 0.35 41 High corrosion resistance for salt water
Bumax DX 129 0.24 - 0.35 41 Very high corrosion resistance and strength
Bumax DX 149 0.24 - 0.35 41 Very high corrosion resistance and strength
Bumax SDX 109 0.24 - 0.35 41 Very high corrosion resistance and strength
1.4529 A8 0.24 - 0.35 41 Very high corrosion resistance and strength

If the PREN value for a SS is over 40, the SS should be fully resistant to localised corrosion (pitting/crevice corrosion) when immersed in seawater.

2202-80 Lean Duplex

  • Strength: ~800 MPa tensile, ~550 MPa yield (almost double 316).
  • Corrosion Resistance: Comparable to 316.
  • Advantages: High strength with lower alloy cost – a smart alternative to 316 for structural use.
  • Applications: Cost-effective choice for load-bearing fasteners and structural assemblies.
  • The economical way to achieve duplex strength.

Hardtec

  • Properties: Hardened stainless steel with excellent drilling capability.
  • Advantages: Faster and cleaner penetration, retains corrosion resistance.
  • Applications: Self-drilling screws and fastening systems where installation speed and durability matter.
  • Hard when you need it, stainless where it counts.

2507-80 Super Duplex

  • Strength: ~800 MPa tensile, ~550 MPa yield.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Fully resistant to saltwater immersion, PREN >40.
  • Applications: Marine, offshore, desalination, and high-chloride exposure environments.
  • Engineered for the sea – ultimate protection against saltwater corrosion.

Bumax® Fastener Range

When only the strongest stainless steel fastener in the world will do.

  • Bumax 88: Equivalent to 316 but stronger (800 MPa).
  • Bumax 109: 1,000 MPa tensile with excellent corrosion resistance.
  • Bumax DX129:
  • Bumax DX149: 1,200–1,400 MPa tensile – the world’s strongest stainless steel fasteners.
  • Bumax SDX109: 1,000 MPa tensile with Super Duplex corrosion resistance.

1.4529 A8 (Super Austenitic)

  • Strength: ~650–700 MPa tensile.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Extreme resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking; reliable even in chlorine-rich atmospheres.
  • Applications: Indoor swimming pools, chemical processing, and aggressive environments where 316 fails.
  • For the harshest chlorine-rich atmospheres – proven where others cannot perform.
